Trevor Malone leads 49 laps in Round 15 of the Lionheart IndyCar Series presented by Overdrive Graphics and Sim Posters on Wednesday night to take the win at Pocono Raceway.
Unlike the previous week, the drivers made it to lap two before the first incident, which was caused when Justin Laxton hit the bumps on the bottom of turn one and drifted up in to Dan Geren. Geren then bounced off the wall and collected Jorge Anzaldo, last week’s winner Anthony Lurcock, and Korey Connor, ending the night for all but Laxton. The second caution came out on lap 8, for an accident involving Jason Robarge. The third caution of the night came out on lap 16 when the #11 car of Joe Hassert pushed wide out of turn three, and bounced off the outside wall before spinning and hitting the inside wall. The race resumed the green, and on lap 28, the cars of Krysta Nelson and Pete Edwins collided without bringing out the fourth caution, which would wave just five laps later for an accident with Jason Robarge and Pierre Daigle. On lap 41, Jack Bogan pushed high in turn three, bounced off the wall and collected Justin Laxton, ending Laxton’s night and marking Laxton’s third incident of the race. Just one lap later, Michael Gray and Jake Wright collided, bringing out the fifth and final caution of the race. Trevor Malone and Jesse Vincent combined for an Alabama 1-2 finish with the 888 car of Michael Gray finishing third. Chris Lanini and John Downing rounded out the top 5. Alfred Shepperd finished 6th, Vincent Bluthenthal finished 7th, Robert Blouin 8th, Jack Bogan 9th, and Pierre Daigle finished 10th. Qualifying held immediately prior to the race saw Trevor Malone capture the pole with series newcomer Jake Wright starting second. Justin Laxton and Dan Geren started third and fourth, with Ian Adams rounding out the top 5. With the second place finish by Vincent, he stretched his lead over Joe Hassert to 134 points. Trevor Malone moved up one position to third, dropping Justin Laxton back to fourth. It was another tough week for drivers mentioned in the race preview, with everyone but Trevor Malone being involved in at least one incident. The series will return next week on May 27th from Gateway Motorsports Park for 120 laps around the one mile oval. Matt Kingsbury lead the field to the green flag and as they headed into turn one, fourth place Ray Kingsbury spun, collecting half the field, ending his night and the night of 4 other cars, including fellow pre-race favorites Jorge Anzaldo and Pierre Daigle. Following the incident, Ray Kingsbury reported that his front wing was damaged on the initial start when Korey Connor did not get up to speed. After a flurry of early race cautions, the field settled down and had its first extended green flag run of the night. Just as pit stops were occurring, an incident between Matt Kingsbury and Dan Geren in turn three brought out a caution. A caution for Joshua Borje-Bonkowski’s spin with 44 laps to go set the conclusion of the race up for an exciting fuel strategy finish, as drivers could only go about 35 laps on a tank of fuel. Just as drivers were beginning to make stop-and-go pit stops, the caution flag flew for Vincent Bluthenthal’s spin. Another caution with three laps remaining for a spin by Robert Blouin, ended the race under caution. Korey Connor finished second in his Team #nailedIt entry, with Robert Blouin moving up from his 18th place starting position. Just outside the podium was newly appointed series admin, Justin Laxton and Michael Gray. Series championship leader, Jesse Vincent finished 6th, John Downing 7th, Vincent Bluthenthal was 8th, Jack Bogan in 9th, and Joshua Borje-Bonkowski rounded out the top 10. Two-lap qualifying held immediately prior to the race, saw Matt Kingsbury capture the pole, with Korey Connor, and the pre-race “Sleeper Pick” of Jack Bogan qualify third, with Ray Kingsbury and Trevor Malone rounding out the top five. Team #nailedIt driver Dan Geren, who had been fast all week in the practice races only managed an 8th place qualifying effort. Justin Laxton, who was also fast in practice qualified in 11th position. Vincent now leads Joe Hassert by 104 points with just four races remaining. Justin Laxton, moved up to third in points, and stands 215 points back of Vincent, and just 15 points ahead of Trevor Malone, who is now fourth in points. Rounding out the top five is Dan Geren, who is 246 points back of Vincent, but just 16 points back from Malone. It was a tough night for the pre-race driver’s to watch as all three drivers were collected in the lap one incident. Pierre Daigle finished 17th, Jorge Anzaldo 18th, and Ray Kingsbury 21st position. The Lionheart IndyCar Series returns to the track on Wednesday, May 20th for 60 laps around “the Trick Triangle” that is Pocono Raceway. This week the Lionheart IndyCar Series presented by Overdrive Graphics and Sim Posters heads to the virtual version of “The Magic Mile” known as the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. This 1.058 mile oval located in Loudon, New Hampshire, has hosted 8 IndyCar Series races with winners such as Bobby Rahal, Al Unser Jr, Scott Sharp and Tony Stewart. Looking to capitalize on last week’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, which was broadcast online on the Global SimRacing Channel, drivers have taken to the track to practice for this week’s 142 lap race. In last night’s final practice race, Dan Geren, Justin Laxton, and Pierre Daigle battled for the win. The key moment of the race was on lap 117, when both Daigle and Laxton pitted. As Laxton and Daigle entered pit road, Laxton drove in hard, forcing Daigle to make a mistake and get caught speeding on pit road. Following the pit cycle, Laxton held a 2 second lead over Dan Geren. Over the final 20 laps, Geren was able to close to within 0.698 seconds of Laxton to finish second. Robert Blouin finshed third, with Daigle, and Jorge Anzaldo rounding out the top 5. Certainly Laxton and Geren will be drivers to watch, as both have turned not only the fastest practice laps, but the fastest qualifying laps as well. Geren’s fastest practice time is 22.029, while Laxton is close behind with a 22.054. In qualifying, Geren again bested Laxton with a 22.110 versus Laxton’s 22.144. Aside from Geren and Laxton, there are several other drivers to watch: Ray Kingsbury- Kingsbury is one of the fastest drivers almost every week, along with Last Lap Motorsports teammates Matt Kingsbury and Joe Hassert. Ray was taken out early in last week’s race at Atlanta, and he will look to rebound this week. Ray is just 161 points out of the lead, and with just 5 races left, he needs to begin closing the gap to have any hope to be crowned the season champion. Jorge Anzaldo – Anzaldo, is coming off a great 4th place finish at Atlanta, which saw him lead his first laps in Lionheart Series competition. He’s riding a wave of confidence, and has logged as many laps in practice as anyone in the field. Can this be the week he puts it all together and finishes on top of the podium? Pierre Daigle – Pierre has been able to find his way to the front in almost all of the week’s practice races. In last night’s final tune up, Daigle led 58 laps following a third place qualifying run. Following last week’s disappointing 21st place finish, Daigle will look to have a good finish and move inside the top 20 in points. Sleeper Pick: Jack Bogan: Bogan has been one of the contenders this season for the “Bad Luck Award”. The last “short track” race the series ran at the Phoenix International Raceway, saw Bogan sit on the pole! He’ll look to regain that magic and have his I Race for Gage/Hope for Heart Defects entry in the mix. Be sure to check back tomorrow for a full race recap, and stop by the Lionheart IndyCar Series Facebook page, as well as series partners, Overdrive Graphics and Sim Posters. Series News: Earlier this week, the Lionheart IndyCar Series Administrators announced the appointment of Justin Laxton as a series admin. Justin joins League President Jorge Anzaldo, Treasurer John Downing, and Joe Hassert. Matt Kingsbury leads 71 laps en-route to his 4th win of the season! The Lionheart IndyCar Series rolled in to Atlanta Motor Speedway for some Wednesday Night iRacing broadcast on Global SimRacing Channel! For the first time this season, the league did not run the Last-Chance Qualifier race, and opted for a three-hour long practice session leading up to the race. Pre-race “Sleeper Pick” Carl Burk was fastest in practice with a lap time of 24.230, which equals 228.807mph, easily surpassing the real-world Atlanta track record of 224.163mph. Qualifying rules for the Lionheart IndyCar Series provide for 2 gallons of Sunoco virtual race fuel and a two lap run. Setting fast-time for the night was Matt Kingsbury in the #21 Last Lap Motorsports entry, posting a lap time of 24.521, a one lap average speed of 226.092mph. Team #nailedIt driver Dan Geren (a pre-race driver to watch) qualified second, just 0.003 seconds behind, followed by Trevor Malone, league sponsor Justin Laxton from Overdrive Graphics, and Anthony Lurcock. Pre-race drivers to watch, Ian Adams qualified his Team #nailedit Ford in 11th, Jason Robarge did not qualify and “Sleeper Pick” Carl Burk qualified 18th. With the field set, attention turned to the race. Calling the race for Global SimRacing Channel was Evan Posocco and Sean Ambrose. The first 12 laps of the race were caution free until the Team #nailedIt drivers of Ian Adams and Jesse Vincent tangled in turn two, collecting Pierre Diagle and the 888 RaceCentre car of Michael Gray. The green flag flew on lap 16 with Matt Kingsbury out front and Justin Laxton running second. On lap 22, Michael Gray again hit the wall, but did not bring out the caution, ending his night. The caution flag flew for the final time on lap 27 for a multi-car incident when Trevor Malone’s car pushed into the wall exiting turn two. The incident collected a usual favorite in Ray Kingsbury, as well as Jack Bogan’s I Race for Gage entry, and Krysta Nelson. Pit stops on lap 57, resulted in a lead change with Justin Laxton passing Matt Kingsbury who stopped for four Firestone virtual tires and fuel. Laxton pitted one lap later and received a 15 second penalty for speeding on pit road. Laxton’s pit stop handed the lead to Anthony Lurcock for one lap until League Admin Jorge Anzaldo lead his first laps in Lionheart Series competition. When Anzaldo pitted, Robert Blouin took over the top spot and held it for three laps until he pitted, handing the lead to league sponsor John Downing from Sim Posters. Downing pitted just two laps later, completing the pit-stop cycle and handing the lead back to Matt Kingsbury who lead the remainder of the race and 71 laps total on the night. Finishing second was League Admin Joe Hassert, with Anthony Lurcock finishing in third place. Jorge Anzaldo and John Downing round out the top 5. Robert Blouin, who lead laps during the pit cycle finished 6th; pre-race favorite Dan Geren finshed 7th. Justin Laxton rebounded to finsh 8th with Vincent Bluthenthal and Alfred Shepperd rounding out the top 10. You can view full race results here. With the win, Kingsbury moved to within 8 points of Jesse Vincent, who managed a 12th place finish despite a heavily damaged car. Joe Hassert currently sits third in points, 92 points behind Vincent. Ray Kingsbury, who was caught-up in an early race accident, sits fourth in points, 161 points back. Trevor Malone rounds out the top five, 211 points back.
