Korey Connor pounces for first Lionheart Series Win!
Korey Connor leads 31 laps to win round 16 of the Lionheart IndyCar Series presented by Overdrive Graphics and Sim Posters on Wednesday night from the Gateway Motorsports Park. Series Admin Joe Hassert led the field to the green with fellow admin’s Justin Laxton and Jorge Anzaldo in second and third. Bringing out the first caution was Jack Bogan for a spin that collected Mark Norbert as well. On lap 11, Joe Hassert gave way for Justin Laxton, before retaking the lead one lap later. As the first set of green flag pit stops cycled through, Joe Hassert and Justin Laxton maintained a one second lead on the field. Mid-way through the second round of green flag pit stops, a caution came out for Jorge Anzaldo. The third caution of the night came out just four laps after going back green for an incident involving Jason Robarge, Carl Burk and Vincent Bluthenthal. When the field went back green, Justin Laxton and Korey Connor battled for the lead. When Laxton came in for his final pit stop, a “screen malfunction” caused him to partially lose his car and hit the Team #nailedit entry of Dan Geren. The incident caused nearly 50 seconds worth of damage for Geren, who had raced his way back on the lead lap after overcoming an early black flag. The final caution came out with 11 laps to go, just as the field had cycled through the final set of pit stops. When the field went back to green, Korey Connor and Jesse Vincent would cruise to a 1-2 finish, with Michael Gray and Ian Adams battling for third. Hassert was able to steal the final podium spot away. Gray would settle for 4th, and Jorge Anzaldo would sneak past Adams to round out the top 5. Adams would finish 6th, with Laxton, John Downing, Krysta Nelson and Dan Geren rounding out the top 10. With his second place finish, Vincent clinched the Season 2 Points Championship, his second Lionheart IndyCar Series title. Big Joe remains 136 points back in second place, with Trevor Malone 234 points back from Vincent. Justin Laxton is just 20 points behind Malone, with Michael Gray jumping two positions to 5th in the points standings. The series returns to the track on Wednesday, June 3rd with an event at the Kansas Speedway. The race will be broadcast live (and will be archived) on the Global SimRacing Channel.
