patrick taylor remembered amidst toughest championship battle in series history

With just four rounds remaining in the 2020 Season, the series once again will take a moment to remember a very special friend, competitor and league organizer. It’s hard to believe that it has been three years since Patrick’s passing, with his loss still felt to this day by all who knew him.

Taylor born and raised in Canada, joined Lionheart late in 2015 competing in just two events before racing his first full season in 2016. It was during that time that everyone involved in the league had the honor of getting to know him. “A friend to all” was one of the ways he was described by his league mates. Patrick was always there with a positive attitude and a friendly voice.

“Patrick was always willing to help,” said league owner Jorge Anzaldo. “It wasn’t long before Patrick joined the admin team and made such a difference. I’ll never forget the hard work and dedication that he showed this league.  He was instrumental in assisting with the day to day operations of the league as well as writing pre-race stories, creating media guides for series broadcast partner GSRC and providing feedback on post-race reports.”

“Sundays before each race week were always the best” Anzaldo said. “Patrick and I would always meet together and go over everything regarding the league. We would finalize little details about the upcoming races, make sure everything was in order and just have great conversations. I can’t tell you how much I miss him and how I wish all the new guys would’ve had the chance to meet him. I often wonder what he would think about where the league is today, especially with the competition, sponsorships and growth.”

Brandon Limkemann had the pleasure of crowning Patrick as the inaugural recipient of the league’s Dan Wheldon Driver of the Year Award in 2016. It was a very special moment and one that took Taylor completely by surprise.

Every year since his passing, the league continues to play tribute to one of Lionheart’s very best. Last year’s memorial race at Mosport was hosted by the Retro Series. This year the leagues IndyCar Series presented by First Medical Equipment will have the honor of celebrating Patrick’s life and contribution to the league.

Canadian Tire Motorsports Park has appeared on the schedule each year beginning in Season 5 and has produced 3 different winners. Both Adam Blocker and Sage Karam have scored victories at the circuit. The two sit one and two in the standings with Karam leading the defending champion Blocker by just 14 points. Kinsella sits 46 points back from Karam and is certainly not out of the fight just yet. Harrington who has had a streak of bad luck the last few rounds with DNF’s will need a strong finish to bring himself back into contention.

Whomever wins the championship this season must prove themselves across two road courses as well as a short track and the superspeedway at Auto Club. The bell has rung, it’s time to battle for every last position in the standings. Will Blocker be able to defend his Lionheart IndyCar Championship or will we have a new champion? The road to victory goes through Mosport.
